Y.O.U. Timeline

In 1971, the Evanston Youth Commission appointed a task force to assess the unmet needs of youth and to develop an effective response. The task force founded Youth Organizations Umbrella, Inc. Y.O.U. was incorporated on September 15, 1971. For 30 years, Y.O.U. has responded to the emerging needs of Evanston's youth through evolving program components and locations.

1972 - First drop-in center opens on the corner of Church and East Railroad
1976 - First team of four street outreach workers are hired
1976 - Emergency housing program begins helping families in crisis
1977 - Office and drop-in center move to the corner of Noyes and Maple
1986 - Y.O.U. and PEER Services begin substance abuse early intervention groups
1990 - Ridgeville Park District funds street outreach pilot in far-south Evanston
1991 - Y.O.U. moves to Sherman Avenue near Nichols Middle School
1993 - First homework center opens at the Sherman Avenue location
1993 - Y.O.U. accepts leadership of the Evanston Child & Adolescent Local Area Network (LAN 40) and becomes its fiscal agent
1994 - Targeted outreach to Hispanic families begins
1995 - Drop-in and homework centers open in Chute School
1996 - Collaboration with the McGaw YMCA in a wilderness camping program begins
1997 - The Chute programs move into the basement of Grace Lutheran Church
1997 - Family Support program, providing individual and family counseling by licensed professional staff, begins
1997 - Respite program is established with State of Illinois (DMH) funding through a contract with the Kenneth Young Center
1999 - Y.O.U. and Family Focus are selected by the State of Illinois (DHS) to create a delinquency prevention program for selected middle school aged youth
1999 - The Evanston Police Department and Y.O.U. receive a grant from the Cook County Judicial Advisory Council to do street outreach delinquency prevention
1999 - Y.O.U. accepts first fee-for service counseling clients
2001 - Juvenile Court funds Y.O.U. to coordinate mediation for juvenile offenders and their victims in District 2 (northeastern Cook County)
2002 - Y.O.U., Family Focus, and the McGaw YMCA are selected by the State of Illinois (DHS) to provide youth development services for middle school youth through a Teen REACH grant
2002 - Y.O.U. is selected by the State of Illinois (DCFS) to provide case management services for high-risk families
